Bucharest: Caruana Again Misses a Chance of Catching Ivanchuk

Round 4 of the Kings Tournament held in Bucharest was marked with Caruana's another "failure." As you know Italian failed to use the chance to defeat Nisipeanu three days ago, while now he didn't manage to beat Topalov who was standing worse for the most of the game.

CARUANA - ТOPALOV

The game could be won earlier while the queens were still on the board, now not obvious, but correct decision was to move to the endgame with three pawns against the knight: 67.Rxc2! Rxe8 and if playing accurately winning would be as 68.Rc5, so 68.g5. Caruana thought it would be easier to win with two rooks: 67.Rxd8? c1Q 68.Rd7+ Kf6 69.Rd6+ Kf7 70.Rd7+ Kf6 71.g5+ Kxg5 72.Rxd5 Qf4+ 73.Kg2 Qg4+ 74.Kf2 Qf4+ 75.Kg1 Qc1+ 76.Kg2 Qc6 77.Red2 Kxh6 78.Kg3 Kg5 79.f6+ Kg6 80.R2d3 Qc7+ 81.Rd6 Qc5

Here the rivals agreed on a draw.

Another miraculous escape helped Vassily Ivanchuk to maintain the leading position: Nisipeanu missed the chance to beat Ukrainian several times.
