Shakhriyar Mamedyarov's first win in Tashkent

One of the winners of Grand Prix London celebrated his first win in the 2nd stage of the competition. His game against Svidler had an intriguing start: Shakhiyar chose  5.е3 in Grunfeld defence, the move which is rarely played at the top competitions; however, he has already played so at the previous Grand Prix in the encounter against Gelfand. So, it was interesting to see how White strengthened chosen continuation.

Svidler preferred not to check it on himself and played  6...e6. The list of the elite GMs playing in this way is limited by Korchnoi. The main line here is 6...c5.

Soon Svidler pushed his c-pawn, apparently that was a mistake leading Black to lose material or just stand worse.

The key moment for assessing the position is the following:

18...Nxd7! 19.Rxd7 Rxc3 20.Rxd8 Rxd8 seems as the most stable defence. Black has the rook and bishop for the queen, but chance to hold the game seems to be realistic.

Svidler played 18...Rxc3? 19.Nxf6+ Qxf6 20.Bxe8. Black doesn't have enough compensation for the exchange. Mamedyarov was successful in converting the advantage.
