Magnus Carlsen Will Enter the New Year As a Record Breaker

His official rating won't be lower than 2851

Magnus Carlsen gained his 5th win in 6 rounds of the London Chess Classic: this time his victim was Judit Polgar. After his today's success we can state confidently that Garry Kasparov's coach Alexander Nikitin was wrong when saying the following in the interview given to our website 2 years ago: "No one will ever reach Kasparov's rating. 2851 is a crazy ELO. I thought Carlsen was fated to do that, but I was wrong.

It turns out Carlsen managed to do this. He should play two more games in London and even if he loses both, his official rating for December 31st will be 2851, i.e. equal to Kasparov's rating of 1999. Any other result will make his ELO even higher.

Formally the winner of the competition is not determined yet: theoretically Kramnik and Adams have a chance to overtake Magnus.
