The highest and lowest ranked Norwegians

The organizers of the Super-GM tournament which will take place from May 7th to 18th in Stavanger, Norway announced the lineup which does nothing but impress:

3. Levon ARONIAN 2809
4. Teimour RADJABOV 2793
5. Sergey KARJAKIN 2786
6. Vishy ANAND 2780
7. Veselin TOPALOV 2771
8. Hikaru NAKAMURA 2767
9. Wang HAO 2743
10. Jon Ludvig HAMMER 2629

The first eight participants are placed exactly in the order they occupy in the current world rankings. Despite the presence of the lowest ranked Jon Ludvig Hammer in the participant list the average rating of the tournament is exceptionally high - 2776.0.

Jon Ludvig Hammer is an obvious outsider of the competition, but as the organizers say in such cases "despite..."
- Hammer is considered to be one of Norway’s greatest chess talents ever;
- Perhaps his greatest achievement was a 2792 performance on Board 1 for Norway at the European Team Championship in 2009;
- He defeated  Vassily Ivanchuk in the European Club Cup in 2010. At the Arctic Chess Challenge rapid tournament in 2011, he defeated Magnus Carlsen for the first time in 10 years.
