ChessBase has published an article by Matej Guid and Ivan Bratko who have held a quite interesting research. The article presents the results of computer analysis of chess games played in the latest Candidates Tournament in London, using the chess engine Houdini 1.5a (64 bit) at search depth of 20 plies. In this graph you can see the comparison of the world chess champions - the lower scores indicate the better quality of play.

The tendency is obvious: contemporary players make better moves, however, noteworthy is Capablanca's position who has outstripped Kasparov and Karpov.

And here's the same research of the games played at the recent Candidates tournament.

The authors note that, "Carlsen’s and Kramnik’s computer score greatly deteriorated in the last few rounds."

As we've noted the research was done by the help of Houdini at deapth of 20 plies which as usual is not enough for making serious and deep analysis of the position.
