"Historical Success." ECU to Hold Event Under UNESCO Patronage

The European Chess Union got an official approval for holding some of its events under UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) patronage. The first such event will be the 15th European Individual Women’s Chess Championship, which will take place from 5-18th July, 2014 in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The ECU says it is the second historical success for European and world chess after recognition by the European Parliament.
The ECU also reminds "on 12th May, 2014 in Paris, the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov, and the President of the French Chess Federation, Mr. Diego Salazar, met with the Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Mrs. Irina Bokova. During the meeting Mrs. Bokova expressed the commitment of UNESCO’s experts to work on the possibility of the ECU project “Chess as a UNESCO intangible world heritage”. The goal of the project will be official recognition of chess as an intangible world heritage. To achieve this recognition, the European Chess Union will establish a special commission in its structure, dedicated to this topic."

The President of the European Chess Union Silvio Danailov has written in his Twitter account (opened earlier in the year), "FIDE started an open war vs. ECU. For no reason, just to show power." Danailov suspects that FIDE is jealous about his organisation because of the European Chess Union's success in the European Parliament.
The European Chess Union (ECU) website reports the Turkish Chess Federation (TCF) withdrew the request for arbitration at the CAS. The appeal was related to the Bidding procedure for the competitions in 2014/15. "Therefore, the decisions of the European Chess Union Board have been confirmed as valid.
The European Chess Union made a decision of holding the European Individual Championship 2014 in Erevan, Armenia. This has been reported by the website armchess.am. The competition is planned to be dedicated to the memory of the 9th World Champion Tigran Petrosian on the anniversary of his 85th birthday in 2014.
