Corsica: Fedorchuk Beats Anand to Face Hou Yifan in Final Match

The 18th Corsican Curcuit is coming to its culmination. Let us remind you that the rapid knock-out finals of 16 players have been preceded by the open qualifier in order to determine 14 participants. Two other players, renowned Viswanathan Anand and Hou Yifan, were let in the knock-out directly. The quarterfinals and semi-finals have taken place yesterday, on October 20th.

The yesterday's hero was GM Sergey Fedorchuk (Ukraine) who has knocked out the former world champion. His victory was quite convincing despite the big difference in rapid FIDE ratings (2664 for Fedorchuk vs 2809 for Anand). In game 1, Anand was White and suddenly got into trouble already in the opening.

ANAND - FEDORCHUK (1/2 finals, game 1)

7.b3!? An unusual move for this line of the English opening; maybe it's even a novelty.
7...h5! 8.h3 f5 9.d4 h4 10.Bb2? White was stubbornly refraining from developing his b1-knight to c3, but here it was already required.
10...hxg3 11.fxg3 Qg5 12.Nbc3 (a bit late) 12...Nf6

13.Nd5 (in case of 13.Bc1 Qh5 White's position isn't too pleasant either) 13...Nxd5 14.cxd5 Qxe3+ 15.Kh2 Nxd4 16.Bxd4 Bxd4 17.Nxd4 Qxd4 18.Qc2 Qc5 19.Qd2 0-0, and Black went on to transform his big advantage into the win.

Thus, Anand needed only a victory in game 2, but in fact he was never close to his goal. Fedorchuk contented himself with the draw sufficient to qualify, even though the course of the game was promising him much more.

The other semi-final match was Hou Yifan - Robert Ruck. This battle was more persistent, the score remaining even both in the rapid and blitz parts of the match. Eventually, the women world champion defeated the Hungarian GM in the Armageddon game and thus qualified to the finals.

Note that there are no games today. The final match between Fedorchuk and Hou Yifan will start tomorrow, on October 22th (12:00 GMT). Besides, it will take place in the Corsican capital of Ajaccio, while all the other games have been played in Bastia.

  • Hou Yifan won the rapid event in Corsica

  • A traditional chess testival is taking place in Corsica these days, its primary event being a knock-out rapid tournament. The main attraction is the participation of Viswanathan Anand (who has already been the winner in Corsica many times) and the women world champion Hou Yifan. The knock-out has been preceded by the open rapid qualifier in order to determine 14 players who would join the aforementioned champions in the final stage.

  • As we already reported the world champion Hou Yifan already assured first place after finishing her penultimate round game against Kosteniuk in a draw. The result didn't come out of any extraordinarily tough fight, however, it is still interesting due to the creatively played opening.

  • Levon Aronian and Hikaru Nakamura have drawn the classical games 3 and 4 after the exchange of blows in the first two encounters. Right now, they are playing the decisive part of their battle, namely a blitz match of 16 games.

For the moment of publication, 6 blitz games out of 16 have been over. The current score is 4-2 to Nakamura.
