Russian Championships: Unexpected Leaders after 5 Rounds

Время публикации: 03.12.2014 18:38 | Последнее обновление: 03.12.2014 20:48

Five rounds have been played in the 2014 Russian Championship Finals which are going on in the city of Kazan.

In the men's tournament, the lead has been seized quite unexpectedly by GM Igor Lysyj who is so far not as famous in the chess world as most of the other finalists, such as Alexander Morozevich, Peter Svidler or Sergey Karjakin. However, Igor has already got the reputation of an excellent theoretician due to his books The Berlin Defence and The Open Games for Black written by him together with Roman Ovetchkin; now it's probably time for his openings skills to tell on his practical results.

In the rounds 4 and 5, Lysyj has defeated Morozevich and Karjakin respectively, which brought him 3.5 out of 5 and the first ever entrance into the 2700+ virtual club (yet unofficially though).

GM Igor Lysyj is the current leader of the Russian Championship

LYSYJ - MOROZEVICH (round 4)

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4 4.Bd2 Be7. Morozevich is well-known for his passion towards unusual paths, and it had worked well in his round 3 game against Svidler (even though his position had been seriously worse at some point), but this time it didn't go so smoothly. Instead of 4...Be7, Black has a wide choise of reliable moves: 4...Bxd2+, 4...Qe7, 4...a5 and 4...c5, but of course White has got good theoretical recipes for each of them.
5.Nc3 0-0. Here and on the next move, 5...d5 is the alternative, but perhaps it wasn't Morozevich intent to play a QGD position with the extra move Bd2 for White which could prove useful in some lines.
6.a3!? b6?! If 6...d5 then White can play even 7.c5!?, but maybe it was the lesser evil.
7.e4 d5 8.cxd5 exd5 9.e5 Ne4 10.Bd3 Bb7 11.0-0 c5 12.Re1. Now the black strong centralized knight is being kicked out, and it seems that the resulting position is strategically much better for White.
At least, in the game Morozevich couldn't prove the opposite.

After 12...Nxc3 13.Bxc3 c4 14.Bf5 Bc8 15.e6! fxe6 16.Bxe6+ Bxe6 17.Rxe6 Black eventually failed to extinguish White's initiative on the kingside, and it's hard to point out the moment where he could do so. ...1-0

Morozevich, who had been in the lead after 3 rounds, then lost another game, this time against the Russian open tournaments specialist Denis Khismatullin.

MOROZEVICH - KHISMATULLIN (round 5)

If White sits and waits his position isn't any better, so Morozevich undertakes the sacrifice in order to play for a win.
24.Rxd6! Bxd6 25.Rxd6 Rb8 26.Bf1 Kg7 27.Bd3 Be8. White's initiative is really unpleasant but Khismatullin starts a very tenacious defence protecting everything he could, despite being short of time as usual.
28.e5 Rd7 29.Rf6 Rdd8 30.Nc6 Bxc6 31.Rxc6 Rdc8 32.Rd6 Rd8 33.Rc6 Nd7!? In the time trouble, Black takes the risks and rejects the repetition.
34.e6 Rb6? Black had to begin with 34...fxe6 and if 35.fxe6 then 35...Rb6. This inaccuracy could cost Khismatullin a full point.

35.Rc7? Missing a nice tactical trick: 35.f6+! Kh6 (35...Kxf6 36.Nd5+) 36.Rxb6 Nxb6 37.e7, and the e7-pawn must decide the game. Now Black's risk proves to be justified even though his play is still far from easy!
35...fxe6 36.Ne4 (threatening Nc5) 36...Kh6! 37.fxe6 Rxe6 38.Nc5 Re1+! The only but sufficient move; the knight couldn't be taken due to the mate on h7.
39.Ka2 Nf8 40.Rc6+ Kg7 41.Ne4 Rh1 42.Nxg5 Rxh2.

The first time control is over, and the position has become a bit clearer: Black's chances are better due to his dangerous passed pawn. In the remaining play, Khismatullin was more accurate and got the well-deserved full point. ...0-1

One of the initial favorites, Sergey Karjakin, has been thrown down to the unusual last place (1.5/5) after he had been convincingly outplayed by the leader.

KARJAKIN - LYSYJ (round 5)

After the opening, a well-known 'hedgehog' type of position has arisen, in which both sides should be very accurate in moving their pawns and watch out for various pawn breakthroughs by an opponent.
19.Qe3?! The queen isn't placed well against the e8-rook as the e-file can be open at any moment. The c2-square is more suitable for it - Black's a7-a6, preparing b6-b5, can be then always met with a2-a4, and the b3-pawn is protected in advance. Another interesting idea is 19.Qg5!?, considering that Black wants to play g7-g6 and Bg7, so White is trying to trigger h7-h6 which in general isn't a desirable move for Black.
19...g6! 20.g4?! The continuation of a dubious plan; it wasn't late to play something like 20.Qe2 Bg7 21.Qc2, and the position is roughly equal.
20...Bg7 21.f3 Ba8! 22.Ba1 e5 23.Nc2 b5. From now on, Black is better due to the horrible f4-weakness near the white king. The g2-bishop is also feeling quite dull.
24.cxb5 axb5 25.Nb4 Ne6 26.Qf2 Bf8! Due to the threat of d6-d5, White isn't able to occupy the d5-square by a piece.

27.Ncd5 (27.Bf1? d5!) 27...Nxd5 28.exd5. Or 28.Nxd5 Bxd5 29.exd5 (29.Rxd5 Nf4 and 30...d5) 29...Nf4 30.Bf1 b4 with solid advantage for Black who's bishop will enter the play via h6, while the f4-knight remains extremely powerful.
28...Nf4 29.Bf1 Rc8. Black has obviously got the upperhand, and, even though the remaining part of the game can cause some questions, one can say that the Black's victory (on move 48) is logical. ...0-1

While Morozevich has 2.5 points after his two losses in a row, Dmitry Jakovenko and Ian Nepomniachtchi are being tied for the 2nd place with 3 points each. The former has defeated Lysyj in round 3 in his typical manner (which is in fact becoming more and more typical for the whole top level): a very pointed opening preparation followed by precise calculation whereas Black didn't actually have any good chance to survive.

JAKOVENKO - LYSYJ (round 3)

The latest White's move 13.Qd1-c1!? had to be met with 13...Bxd5! (the mighty d5-knight should be get rid of as soon as possible) 14.Rd1 Nd4! 15.exd4 Bxf3 16.gxf3 cxd4 with rough equality.
13...Na5? (this mistake proves to be nearly decisive) 14.Rd1! b5? (14...Nxc4 15.Qc4 - if 15...b6 then 16.a5 - isn't pleasant either, yet it is the lesser evil) 15.axb5 axb5 16.Bxb5 Bxd5 17.Qxc5 (Jakovenko has calculated everything very accurately, and the exchange of blows brings him a winning position) 17...Nb3 18.Rxa8 Nxc5 19.Rxd8 Rxd8 20.Bc6 Bxc6 21.Rxd8+ Bf8 22.Nd4 Bb7 23.b4 Ne4 24.Nf5 Nc3 25.f3.

Black is absolutely helpless, so he just resigned. 1-0

The Women's Russian Championship final is being very uncompromising and abundant with blunders and mistakes; it would be enough to say that the latest two rounds saw no draws! The youngest participant and the World Women Champion under 20 Aleksandra Goryachkina is in the lead with 4 points out of 5; the representative of the host city, experienced Alisa Gallyamova, is next to her with 3.5 points; Valentina Gunina, Olga Girya and Alexandra Kosteniuk have 3 points each. Gunina, as the Phoenix, has managed to score 3 victories in a row after the disastrous start.

Gunina vs Kashlinskaya

GUNINA - KASHLINSKAYA (round 4)

White's position is probably a little bit more promising, which of course can't justify the blunder that followed: 30...Be5?? (Black refrains from taking the g4-pawn due to 31.f3 but forgets that here it's possible as well) 31.f3 Bxc3 (31...Bxg3 32.fxe4 is also hopeless) 32.fxe4 Bxd2 33.Qxd2 Qxg4 33.exd5 h5 34.Qd4 Qe2 36.Re1 Qc2 37.e4 h4 38.Qf6. 1-0 (All the games annotated by GM Andrey Deviatkin)

There are four more rounds to go in each tournament; today is a day-off. Round 6 will start tomorrow, on December 4th, at 12:00 GMT. See our special tournament pages with pairings, full standings, etc.: men, women.

  • Before the final round, there is still no clarity in both the Men's and Women's Russian Champioships finals taking place in Kazan. Igor Lysyj, the leader of the men's tournament, has drawn his penultimate round game against Ian Nepomniachtchi (who is half-a-point behind) without big adventures. The other contender for the championship, Dmitry Jakovenko, has also signed a piece treaty (although was pressing throughout the game) - against Alexander Morozevich.

  • Two more rounds have been played in the Russian Championship finals taking place in the Kazan Kremlin. In the men's tournament, Igor Lysyj is still in the sole lead, even though, after yet another victory over Denis Khismatullin in round 6, he has been slowed down by Vadim Zvjaginsev.

    ZVJAGINSEV - LYSYJ (round 7)

  • Valentina Gunina defends her champion's title, accomplishing the task too hard for Kramnik and Giri

  • Two rounds are over in the Men's and Women's Russian Championships taking place simultaneously in the city of Kazan. In the men's championship, the lead is being shared between Vadim Zvjaginsev, Alexander Morozevich, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Igor Lysyj (1.5/2 each).

    MOROZEVICH - GRACHEV (round 2)

  • 27-years old Igor Lysyj from Yekaterinburg is the new Russian Champion

  • The Belarusian Chess Championship finished in Minsk. The only female participant Anastasia Ziazulkina had a successful start but by the end of the tournament stuck and managed to take only a point in four rounds. As a result she finished 9th. Kirill Stupak, on the contrary, took advantage of the finishing part of the tournament which eventually decided the winner of the championship. Stupak gathered 9 out of 13, Alexey Aleksandrov stayed half a poitn behind, while four players gathered 8 points.

  • The Dutch championships have started in Amsterdam. Two rounds are already behind - as men's, sowomen's sections have solo leaders by now.

  • Russian Rapid Grand Prix quarter finals have ended in Rostov. The players participate in a knock-out tournament playing 2 games in each round with a time control of 15 minutes with 10 seconds increment. If the match ends in a draw, the participants are obliged to play a Sudden Death game. This was the case between Alexander Morozevich and Pavel Maletin, but the game turned to be a bad experience for Alexander who was Black.

  • Belarusian Chess championships among men and women are held in Minsk. Anastasia Ziazulkina decided to participate in men's section: after Round 7 she has +2. She has defeated Sergey Zhigalko (2682, the rating favourite), Valery Smirnov (2327, after loss to Anastasia, he withdrew), Aleksandr Kocheev 2391; Ziazulkina has lost only in Round 1 against Vitaly Teterev (2507).

  • Round 2 of the 5th stage of the Women's Grand Prix taking place in Lopota, Georgia brought only two decisive games.

Harika Dronavali defeated Alexandra Kosteniuk as black, while Hou Yifan beat Bela Khotenashvili. Thus, the Chinese player is leading the field with 2/2.
