The 3rd playing day in Wijk aan Zee is so far the most resounding one: Magnus Carlsen and Levon Aronian lost their games. Both upsets have resulted from blunders, especially the Aronian's failure.

SO - ARONIAN

20...Ng8?? In case of 20...Nd7 the position would have remained double-edged.
21.Bh5 g6 22.fxg6 Bxh3 23.gxf7+ Kd7 24.fxg8Q Rxg8. With an extra piece for White, the final stage was a matter of technique. Aronian tried to be resourceful but it was too late.

'My mind went blank', Aronian said in the commentary for our website. 'The position is extremely interesting, Black has plenty of ideas, and I spent 35 minites here. It seemed to me Black should be okay but I wasn't sure about it. Of course, I had to play 19...Ng8 at once, instead of 19...e4. After I had played 19...e4 I had already to choose 20...Nd7, it wasn't necessary to make a one-move blunder. But my mood is okay - it's not the end of the world. Losing a single game doesn't mean a lot, as proved by experience'.

The full commentary by Aronian can be heard (in Russian) in the audio player.

Wesley So (in the latest interview for the official website): 'It's my first victory over Aronian, and it's also a good game because I got the revenge from last year's tournament when he beat me. He did blunder a piece, but if he played correctly the position would have been very unclear'.

'Even though Levon Aronian is #5 in the world - and he used to be #2 - he is still also a human', Wesley added.

This victory has allowed So to join Ding Liren, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Radoslaw Wojtaszek (each has 2 points out of 3) in their pursiut of the leaders Fabiano Caruana and Vassily Ivanchuk. Caruana made a difficult draw against Anish Giri; even though Black's position didn't seem to be lost at any point, he had to be careful and patient till the very end. The Ukrainian GM simply demolished Van Wely.

IVANCHUK - VAN WELY

This is the final position which one is more likely to see in a nightmare rather than in a practical game. As to how it came to this, Ivanchuk was quite laconic: 'It's hard to believe that Black can be fine after moves like 11...b5, 12...b4, and 13...e5'.
