Wesley So Pursues Carlsen

Spanish torture by the American

The most notable event of the 11th round was Wesley So's quick and impressive victory over the Croatian GM Ivan Saric who, unlike Wesley, seems to have lost his spirits by the end of the Wijk aan Zee supertournament. As a result, So is now on the clear second place, just half-a-point behind Magnus Carlsen who failed to outplay Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in the Grunfeld Defence with White, despite all efforts.

SO - SARIC
Wijk aan Zee 2015, round 11

The Ruy Lopez
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.c3 O-O 9.h3 Re8 10.d4 Bb7 11.Nbd2 Bf8 12.a4

An important position of the Zaitsev variation. Basically, Black has basically two main options: 12...h6 and 12...Na5. After 12...h6, the sharpest continuation is 13.Bc2 exd4 14.cxd4 Nb4 15.Bb1 c5 16.d5 Nd7, which is well-known since Kasparov-Karpov matches; one of the most recent examples is Caruana - Morozevich (Reggio Emilia 2011) won by Black. If White wants, however, he can deviate in favour of calmer 13.d5 (Kokarev - Predke, 2013).
If 12...Na5 then the possible lines are 13.Bc2 b4 (Inarkiev - Eljanov, World Cup 2009) and 13.Ba2 c5 (Stellwagen - Adams, Wijk aan Zee 2009). Curiously enough, the inventor of the variation Igor Zaitsev, in the first game ever for this position, has played 12...Qd7!?
As for the way chosen by Saric, one can judge by the rest of the game that it's weaker than the mentioned options. If so, this would hardly be a surprise, because Black gives up the center at once without having anything concrete in mind.
12...exd4?! 13.cxd4 Qd7. If 13...Nb4 then White has 14.Ng5 Re7 15.Nxf7! Rxf7 16.Bxf7+ Kxf7 18.Qb3+ d5 19.e5 Ne8 20.axb5 with serious advantage (Kotronias - Mastrovassilis, Kavala 2003).
14.axb5 axb5 15.Rxa8 Bxa8 16.Ng5 Nd8 17.e5! Nd5 18.Ndf3. As a result of several logical center-oriented moves, the initiative clearly belongs to White.
18...h6. There is already no clear recipe of equality, but 18...g6 19.Ne4 Bg7 would leave more chances for neutralizing White's activity, as in case of 20.Bh6! Black has a sudden counter-strike 20...Ne3! 20.Bxe3 (or 20.Rxe3) 20...Bxe4.
19.Ne4 Nb4!? 20.Qd2

20...dxe5. Most likely, So would have met 20...Bd5!? with 21.Qxb4! (after 21.Bxd5? Nxd5 Black exchanges the extremely dangerous bishop and is close to equality) 21...Bxe4 22.Rxe4 d5 23.Qe1 dxe4 24.Qxe4, and Black's position is very difficult despite his extra exchange for a pawn.
21.Nxe5 Qf5 (21...Qc8 22.Qc3! threatening Bxh6 is barely better) 22.Nc5! Bxc5 23.dxc5 Bd5? This resource, which seems to have been prepared by Saric from afar, actually loses by force. 23...Rxe5? 24.Qxd8+ Kh7 25.Rxe5 Qxe5 26.Bxf7 makes Black resign even quicker, but 23...Kh7! (which might be found by the process of elimination) 24.Qxb4 Rxe5 25.Rxe5 Qxe5 26.Qxb5 Qe4 would have left some hope to bail out.
24.g4! Qf6 25.Bxd5 Nxd5. This is a silent resignation, but the thing is that 25...Rxe5 26.Qxb4 Rxd5 27.Re8+ Kh7 28.Qe4+ loses a rook.
26.Qxd5 Nc6 27.Nf3 Rd8 28.Qe4.

1-0 (Annotated by GM Andrey Deviatkin)

After 11 rounds, Magnus Carlsen has 8 points, So is nearby with 7.5. 3 players are tied for the 3rd place: Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Anish Giri (who has outplayed his compartiot Loek van Wely), and Ding Liren - the latter was a bit lucky against Wojtaszek who overpushed and lost an equal position after having been unable to crush the Chinese player's tenacious defence.

The crosstable, pairings, all games, etc.

The key games of the penultimate round, which will begin today at 12:30 GMT, are Ding Liren vs Carlsen, and Giri vs So.
