Right after Carlsen's final draw vs Saric that secured his first place in the main Tata Steel tournament, Garry Kasparov congratulated him in his Twitter:
"Congrats to @MagnusCarlsen for his Wijk aan Zee win. Greatness comes from being better consistently or at the right moment & he does both!"
Some time afterwards, Kasparov wrote a note on his Facebook where he makes observations about the tournament as well as about current chess trends in general.
First of all, he congratulates Carlsen once more: '"Congratulations" is one thing you never tire of hearing... He showed not just his skill, which we all recognize, but also his fighting spirit when he got off to a slow start'.
Then the great player points out the young age of the top 5 finishers: 'Magnus is just 24, but the pack of four players who finished just a half-point behind him are aged 20, 21, 22, and 24! No country for old men, with "old" being anyone born before 1990!' [This might give a strong hint to those still having huge chess ambitions at their 20+ with only 2500 something - AD]
According to Kasparov, this 'will push Carlsen to reach his potential': 'I would never have achieved my best chess without having Karpov around to challenge me, although I would not have said I enjoyed our constant matches at the time! For Magnus it is a little different. Although he has faced the veteran Anand in two consecutive world championship matches, Carlsen is clearly the leader of a whole new generation. They will not fade, they will only grow stronger and hungrier. So he must as well!'
The note ends with Kasparov's special congratulations to the young U.S. players, Sam Shankland and Sam Sevian, who both performed very well in the Challengers tournament (Shankland finished 3rd, Sevian tied for 5th). Both participated in the Kasparov Chess Foundation program, which apparentlyhas a lot to do with the fact that Sevian became the youngest GM in the U.S. history in November 2014.
Garry Kasparov and Magnus Carlsen had a secret meeting in Oslo on October 23rd, Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang reports. Prior to that, Kasparov had been taking part in 2014 Oslo Freedom Forum.
As we've already reported Magnus Carlsen signed contract to play Vishy Anand in the World tile match. It is scheduled to start on November 7 in Sochi., Russia. According to FIDE all world champions are expected to visit the event, however, the internaional chess organization doesn't confirm whether the knock-out championship winners are also invited. Meanwhile, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov's assistant Berik Balgabayev invited Garry Kasparov personally replying him in Twitter.
Garry Kasparov tweeted he now enjoyes holiday with the family after "very long and tiring FIDE campaign. I didn't win, but my team and I did a lot of good to promote chess," and added he is not going to "abandon our supporters or the many programs we created. Our friends & allies are for life & we keep our promises."
Today at 23.00 Moscow time in St Louis there will be a press conference with Garry Kasparov and Nigel Short, devoted to the start of their friendly rapid and blitz match. The old friends and sparring partners will play ten games - each day one rapid (time control 25+10) and four blitz (5+3). All material about the match
This is what Garry Kasparov has tweeted several minutes ago: "Congratulations to Magnus Carlsen! Could my rating record last other than 13 yrs? It was always 'my' number. 22 was also a good age for me!"
The leading Scandinavian airline company SAS Airlines has announced the launch of a partnership deal with Magnus Carlsen. As announced on the airline's website, it will sponsor the Play Magnus Live Challenge. Carlsen himself confirmed the arrangement on Twitter.
As Chess-News found out Garry Kasparov hasn't got any specific offer to help Magnus Carlsen during the World Championship Match. The Norwegian newspaper VG, perhaps, overestimated his announcement made at the press conference in Oslo. At the press conference one of the journalists asked Kasparov about his possible cooperation with Carlsen and Kasparov has really mentioned that he still has good relationship with Magnus and his team.
A few considered Fabiano Caruana the favourite of the World Rapid Championship: despite his high rating, Italian is hardly the luckiest rapid player. Noetheless, he was constantly in the leading group throughout the competition, sometimes even was the sole leader. Eventually, Fabiano finished second losing the winner only half a point.
This made Caruana to head the world rapid rating :
