Artemiev Comes of Age

The young GM proves strongest in Kaliningrad

In Kaliningrad, the Russian championships Higher Leagues for men and women have finished.

Buchholz was needed to determine the winner of the men's tournament. In today's final round, on top board Alexander Motylev, playing White, chose to make a short draw with Vladislav Artemiev, and the result eventually led to first place for... Artemiev.

Ivan Bukavshin could have prevented that happening - at the next table, he played Vadim Zvyagintsev and had an overwhelming position, but in a strange way on move 41, he gave away his advantage and a draw soon followed.

ZVJAGINTSEV - BUKAVSHIN

41...Be5? He could have taken the bishop: 41...Rxc2 42.Rxc2 Rxc2 43.Bxd4 Be5 44.Qxf4 Nd7, and retain an extra piece.
42.Rxa2 Qxa2 1/2 After 43.Qxh3 it is certainly a draw, but it should still be proved: 43...Qe6 44.Bb3!, and here if Black plays 44...Qf6?!, then the game could have one of three results - 45.Nxh6 Kg7 46.Nf5+ Kf8 etc. Incidentally, Zvjagintsev had something to play for, but he did not get into the coveted top five.

Thus, the five qualifiers for the Superfinal are: Artemiev, Motylev, Bukavshin, Khairullin, Dubov.

Vladislav Artemiev's victorious march in the first six rounds followed an unusual pattern: drawing with White and winning with Black, and only in the last third of the distance did the youngest grandmaster change his pattern to the more normal one. He remained unbeaten throughout.

In his 17 years, Artemyev has managed not only to win the Higher League, but also to become the champion of Russia among juniors, the silver medalist in the national championship at rapid chess, and also to give an interview to Chess-News: after a long live broadcast, more than two years ago, Vlad was forced say goodbye and go to sleep, because it was already late in his city.

Here's what he had said about himself in April 2013: "I'm from Siberia, from the city of Omsk. My father taught me to play chess when I was six years old. My father is the director of a company which builds roads, and my mother is an accountant. I study in a normal school, attending classes in my spare time from chess. I also like history. I have only one "three" mark - in mathematics. I found it hard to raise my rating to 2400, but after 2500 it became easier. I always root for Anand, and also like Nakamura. Of course, I know the basic opening lines, but do not follow the novelties. During the game, I usually leave theory with either colour, but especially Black. I especially like playing blitz, this is my strongest point. I always believe that I can save hopeless positions".

After reviewing the games our hero played in Kaliningrad, you can decide for yourself whether his chess has come of age.
