Biel, third round: no draws and new leaders

So far, the main event at the Biel Festival has lived up to the spectators' hopes - there is no lack of fighting to complain about.  Yesterday, all three games were lively battles that ended decisively.

The most experienced player was unable to maintain the lead gained by his win at the start

In a complicated position, Adams lost the thread:
17.Nxe5? After the correct move 17.exd5 Bd6 (17...Nd3 18.Be3 Nxd5 leads to a promising position for White: 19.Rxd3! cxd3 20.Qxd3 Nf6 21.Nxb5) 18. Be3 Ng6 Black has compensation for the pawn, in an unclear position.
17...Qxe5 18.f4 Bc5+ 19.Be3 Maybe the Englishman missed that after 19.Kh2 Qe7 he cannot play 20.e5 because of 20...Ng4+!, whilst if 19.Kh1, then 19...Nxe4.

19...Qh5 20. Rd2 dxe4 Having won a pawn, Vachier confidently realised his advantage on move 36. 0-1

After his usual opening adventures, Rapport had achieved decent play and then outplayed his opponent, but several mistakes just before the time control spoilt an excellent game.
38...a3 (Stronger is the calm 38...Rxg3 39.f7 Bf8 with a large advantage) 39.f7 Rxg3? Missing a tactical blow. After 39...Rf8 40.Rf1 a2 (Threatening to take on f7) Navara would probably have had to play 41.Ra1 (Totally depressing is 41.Nb3 Ba4 42.Na1 Be5) and suffer in an ending a pawn down, although the reduced material means that White has reasonable drawing chances.
40.Ne4! Rg2+? The 40th move is not the best time to decide on the unusual 40...Bxe4! forcing a draw: 41.Rxd6 Rf3 42.Rxe6 Rxf7 43.Rxe4 a2 44.Bd4 Rh7! 45.Rf4 Re7+ 46.Kf1 Rd7.
41.Kf1 Bf8 42.Kxg2. The picture has changed, and now it is White who has good chances to realise his advantage of the extra exchange. But all is not yet lost.
42...Bxe4+ 43.Kg3 e5 44.Bg5 a2 45.Bf6

45...Bd3? Maybe he could have saved himself with the unexpected 45...c5! (Freeing c7 for the king) 46.Bxe5 (Nothing comes from 46.Rd8+ Kc7) 46...Bc2 47.Rc1 Bg6 48.Rf1 Kd7, eg.: 49.Rf2 Ke6 50.Ba1 Bd3! 51.Rxa2 Bxc4 52.Ra7 Be7.
46.Bxe5 Bxc4 47.Bf6 a1=Q 48.Rd8+! 1-0 David Navara wins his second successive game and, like Vachier-Lagrave, has become one of the leaders.

Also on 2/3 is Radoslaw Wojtaszek, the Polish GM who recently married Alina Kashlinskaya. He beat the out of form Pavel Eljanov in typical style.

Round four starts today at 15.00 Moscow time, 13.00 London time.
