The second round of the European Chess Club Cup started today in Skopje, Macedonia. Some of the favourites (including SOCAR and Siberia) preferred to let their top players rest for now. Thus, Topalov, Kramnik, Aronian, Svidler, Jakovenko and Gelfand (from other clubs) are not participating in today's round. On the other hand, Italian Obiettivo have all of its favourites fighting for the club today: Leko, Karjakin, Nakamura, Vachier-Lagrave. Their rival is the club from Zurich with GM Shirov on the first board.

In the women's section the top battle is between rating favourites ShSM and Nona.

  • Today in Sochi the participants arrive for the Russian team Championships for men and women. The line-up for Sibir (Novosibirsk) can be regarded as a real sensation: its top two boards are Vladimir Kramnik and Levon Aronian. The team also includes Pavel Maletin, Dmitry Jakovenko, Wang Yue, Anton Korobov, Dmitry Bocharov and Dmitry Kokarev.

It is worth recalling Kramnik's words in his interview on our website in September 2013:

  • If I were asked to describe Macedonia with just one photograph, I would definitely go for this one:

The post Soviet state that grew religious - this is basically all you need to know about the host country of the European Club Cup.

  • The draw for the men's and women's Club Cup has been done yesterday late at night. The final composition of the teams regarding the players on the boards has also been published. The Economist-SGSU from Saratov presented the most unexpected order of the players. The rating favourites Morozevich and Tomashevsky are playing on the 4th and 5th boards, while the top boards are occupied by Andreikin, Nepomniachtchi and Alekseev.
