Aeroflot Open 2016 Scheduled for March: Full Regulations

The next Aeroflot Open festival will take place in Cosmos hotel, Moscow from February 29 to March 11, 2016. Traditionally, the festival consists of three Swiss classic tournaments: Group A for the players with FIDE ratings over 2549, Group B for 2300-2549 and Group C (below 2300).

The prize fund of the main competition is 65 thousand Euros (18 thousand for the first place). As usual, the winner will also qualify for the Dortmund round-robin tournament. Special prizes are allocated for the best veteran, women and junior players.

  • Three Swiss-system tournaments with the classical time control will be held within the Aeroflot Open-2015 which is re-launched in Russia this year as Chess-News has already reported. The highlight will be the A-tournament open for players with Elo 2550 or higher. The playing dates are March 29th - April 6th, with all the rounds of the tournaments A and B beginning at 15:00 Moscow time. On April 7th, the open blitz tournament will be held (Swiss system, 9 double rounds).

  • The famous festival will be resumed

  • The 11th Moscow Open (RSSU Cup) will take place in the capital of Russia from January 29th to February 9th, 2015.

  • The General Director of Aeroflot confirmed that the revived chess festival will take place next year. This was confirmed in an interview with our site by the director of the festival, Alexander Bakh. 

    "There are definite hopes. I have spoken with Russian Chess Federation President Filatov, and he told me that in a conversation he had with the Aeroflot company's General Director, the latter said that we will organise the tournament again next year.".

  • Not long ago we pointed out that the prize fund of the forthcoming Jerusalem European Championship is one third less than the previous one. However, as a result of ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili’s visit to Jerusalem, the prize fund was increased to 20 thousand euros. The final sum of the prize fund is thus 120 thousand euros.

  • The opening ceremony of the new festival with an old name Aeroflot Open will be held today at 20:00 MSK time (17:00 CET). The dates are as usually chosen so that the participants of Moscow Open are able to play at another open competition right after finishing the first one.

  • The Russian Chess Federation which organizes Aeroflot Open 2013 decided to change the format of the festival. The changes made are so complicated that we offer you the schedule of the festival published on the RCF website at full:

  • According to the Chess-News source, Tata Steel company is going to remain the chief sponsor of the annual Wijk aan Zee festival in 2016.

  • The traditional festival 'Baku Open', which was held in recent years in August on the seaside of the Caspian Sea, will be held from 21 September until 1 October this year. The meeting place hasn't changed: AF Hotel on the same seaside of the same sea.
