Everything illuminated in the last round

The final of the tournament “A” of the annual SPICE Cup tournament that took place at the University of Texas Tech, appeared to be intriguing. The field of the tournament corresponded to its solid category 17 which is quite unusual for the North American tournaments.

The scoring system was taken from “Bilbao formula” – 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw. Before the last round Cuban player Leinier Dominguez had 15 points winning his nearest rivals Vietnamese Le Quang Liem and German Georg Meier  only one point.

Everything illuminated in the last round when Meier finished his game in a draw, and two other competitors decided the fate of the first place.

Dominguez’s taking of the White pawn f5 with his bishop d3 happened to be his decisive mistake in this short but intense struggle. After that Le Quang Liem went on playing an exceptionally showy combination:

27.Rd7! e5 28.Qxe5! Bxd7 29.Bc3! 1-0

Despite an extra rook Black are losing. The former world blitz champion Domingues decided not to try White’s abilities as far as it’s not hard to follow the main variant: 29...Kf7 30.Qxg7+ Ke8 (or 30...Ke6 31.Qe5+! Kf7 32.Qf6+) 31.Qh8+! Kf7 32.Qf6+ Ke8 33.Bb4 and Black are forced to give their queen from a1 (or f1) which is of course hopeless.

Standings of the tournament "A":

1. Le Quang Liem (2717, Vietnam) – 17
2-3. Dominguez (2710, cuba) and Meier (2648, Germany) – 15
4. Robsson (2583, USA) – 11
5. Feller (2668, France) – 9
6. Shulman (2608, USA)  - 7

Israeli player Bykhovski won in the group “B” (10th category) with 6.5 out of 9, while “C” group was headed by the Grandmaster Benjamin Finegold from USA.

"SPICE" is an acronym for The Susan Polgar Institute for Chess Excellence. It's hard to overestimate the the former world champion's role in the organization of the event.
