Russian Chess Federation’s website announced the sad news that Igor Botvinnik, the World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik’s second cousin, has passed away.

“He, a mathematician, dedicated his whole life to chess” – says the statement, and that can hardly be disproved. In 1985 Igor Botvinnik graduated from the High School of Coaching and since then he has been working with children. Igor Botvinnik is known as an international arbiter, he opened a school for children (named after Mikhail Botvinnik) and the fund “Mikhail Botvinnik” is also founded by him.

The year of 2011 in the chess world is known as “the year of Botvinnik”. With Igor Botvinnik’s help RCF managed to create a photo album to Patriarch’s centenary.
