Dnepropetrovsk Has Hosted the World Chess Art Week. Hamilton Russel Cup Has Been Shown, While Ilyumzhinov Was Presented Maharaja

Ukrainian Dnepropetrovsk hosted World Chess Art Week from April 19th-25th. More than 5,000 players from Dnepropetrovsk region and Ukraine, as well as guests from Russia, Belarus and Israel have participated in the event. 

The FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov visited the event, which took place in Potemkin Palace, being invited by the Governor of Dnepropetrovsk region Alexander Vilkul and Ukrainian Chess Federation. 

At the opening ceremony of the event the Governor Alexander Vilkul noted: "The economics of the developed countries are called economics of knowledge; the countries that appreciate and develop intellect win the global competition. The programs oriented on development of intellectual potential are priority for Dnepropetrovsk. The World Chess Art Week will become one of the significant events in the history of our region."

In the framework of the 80th anniversary of the Dnepropetrovsk region the regional Chess Federation together with the regional administration organized the simul on 80 boards by the famous Israeli GM Alik Gershon the owner of the Guinness world record for simultaneous chess games. 

The simul took more than 6 hours. Gershon won 56 games, lost 7 and drew 17.

The history museum hosted the exhibition "Move after move" dedicated to the history of development of chess in the region.

The unique exhibit, the Hamilton Russel Cup, has been given to the Ukrainian Chess Federation for temporary exhibition. 

The Cup is the main trophy for the winning team of the World Chess Olympiad. It was offered by the English magnate Frederick Hamilton-Russell as a prize for the 1st Olympiad which took place in London 1927. The Ukrainian men's national team won the Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk (2010). 

Kirsan Ilyumzhinov has visited the exhibition. 

Polina Usenko, the young artist, presented the FIDE President her work "Chess Maharaja" in which she used interesting techniques of combination of graphics, pastel and gouache on the black paper. The compiler of the catalog, released after the exhibition, is Irina Filatova.  

The International Chess Composition Contest in the National center of Aerospace Education for Youth, Internet competition among the students of Dnepropetrovsk region, rapid tournament for veterans in Shevchenko park and a number of other competitions were held within the frame of the Week.
