Poland Avoided Annihilation in the Match Against Ukraine. Korobov Couldn't Defend the "Doctor Slyusarchuk Variation"

In the last round of the "classical" part of the match between the Polish and the Ukrainian teams organised in Lublin, the hosts' team managed to win two and draw three games, although it already lost the chance of equalising the total score.

The final score in the classical chess is 14.5 - 10.5 in the Ukrainians' favour. There will be a rapid match and a blitz tournament on 29 May.

On the fifth playing day, the winner of the Aeroflot Open Mateusz Bartel managed to slightly improve his disastrous result that he had after four rounds.

EFIMENKO - BARTEL

35.Qxe5?? (a gross blunder) 35...Nf5!, and Black's attack straight away became decisive.

Anton Korobov deviated from the scandalous game of the last year's match Rybka - Slyusarchuk on the move 17, but that didn't bring him any luck.

SWIERCZ - KOROBOV

17...b4 (Rybka was puzzled by preliminary 17...h6). Dariusz Swiercz developed a very strong initiative, but, probably, could have played more accurately in the course of the struggle.

Because if Korobov took the rook with the king, rather than playing the incorrect 31...Qxf7?, he had a chance of defending successfully. As it happened, Swiercz quickly won and became the only Polish grandmaster who ended up on the "plus" score.

Individual results:
Ukraine: Fedorchuk - 4 out of 5, Efimenko and Korobov - 3 each, Kryvoruchko - 2.5, Zherebukh - 2.
Poland: Swiercz - 3, Macieja - 2.5, Miton - 2, Bartel and Socko - 1.5 each.

Have a look at the games from the last classical round.
