The first day of the Women's Rapid World Championship in Batumi was already very eventful. The tough field of congregated players (there are 50 participants) means that it's possible to play against a difficult opponent in any round, irrespective of a player's position in the table. Overall, it's the Chinese who are setting the tone for the competition. One of them, Huang Qian, has already won against Tatiana Kosintseva, Zhu Chen and Maia Chiburdanidze. Pia Cramling's "harvest" was a bit more modest, but also substantial: Maka Purtseladze, Nona Gaprindashvili and Zhao Xue.

The "old soldiers": Maia Chiburdanidze and Pia Cramling. It's hard for the opponents

Therefore, only two chess players remain with the perfect score: Huang Qian and Pia Cramling. They will play each other in the fourth round. Humpy Koneru, Nino Khurtsidze, Antoaneta Stefanova and Alexandra Kosteniuk are half a point behind. Fifteen players have two points each, including Maia Chiburdanidze, who started well but couldn't cope with the Chinese on fire.
