Batumi: Stefanova Keeps the Lead One Round Before the End. Lahno Is in Second Place After Defeating Kosteniuk

Время публикации: 03.06.2012 17:14 | Последнее обновление: 03.06.2012 17:14

The end of the exciting Women's Rapid World Championship in Batumi is fast approaching.

In the traditional video transmission from the press centre, Evgeny Surov is being helped with the commentary by Mark Dvoretsky, Emil Sutovsky and Zurab Sturua. The battles are covered on the Chess-News Twitter page in short; the latest tweets show up on the main page of our site.

These are the standings of the leaders before the start of the final round (it's just started at 17.00 Moscow time):
1. Antoaneta Stefanova - 8 out of 10,
2. Kateryna Lahno - 7.5,
3-6. Anna Muzychuk, Alexandra Kosteniuk, Humpy Koneru, Dronavalli Harika - 7 each.

It's a shame that there can't be a revanche Lahno - Stefanova in the final round (in the 9th round game between them, the Ukrainian missed the mate in one in the completely winning position), but, as it's well-known, players are not paired twice in a "Swiss".

  • The Women's World ex-Champion in classical chess Antoaneta Stefanova has just become the Rapid World Champion.

At the start of the final round of the World Championship in Batumi, Stefanova's main rival Kateryna Lahno, who was half a point behind, satisfied herself with a draw against Anna Muzychuk.

Stefanova slowly ended up in a bad position against Dronavalli Harika.

  • Antoaneta Stefanova and Alexandra Kosteniuk are the heroines of the Rapid Championship

  • The 8th round of the ACP Women Cup Rapid which takes place in Tbilisi, Georgia, changed the top of the standings. The leader Kateryna Lahno drew against Victoria Cmylite in an interesting encounter, which allowed Pia Cramling, who defeated Anna Muzychuk, to catch her.

  • The tenth and penultimate round games of the Women's Rapid World Championship have started at 15.00 Moscow time. The sole leader Antoaneta Stefanova is White against Anna Muzychuk; Alexandra Kosteniuk, who's chasing the Bulgarian, also has White against Kateryna Lahno. Follow these and other games live and listen to the commentary by Mark Dvoretsky and other guests of the press centre on our site.

  • The first day of the European Individual Women Rapid Chess Championship which takes place in Gaziantep, Turkey, has been finished. In the 6th round Tatiana Kosintseva, Nana Dzagnidze and Alexandra Kosteniuk gained victories with White on the first three boards. Their were Anna Muzychuk, her sister Mariya and Antoaneta Stefanova respectively. Three of the leaders gathered 5 points out of 6.

  • The 1st round of the Women's Grand Prix has finished in Kazan. It wasn't very decisive - only two wins in six games. No fight in Koneru - Hou Yifan and Cmilyte - Lahno. The former champions once again showed their deep knowledge of one of the Grunfeld lines - this is not their first theoretical battle in this opening.

  • Women's Rapid and Blitz World Championships that were held at the beginning of June are still fresh in memory. One can hardly wish for more comfort than we had in Batumi: a five-star hotel, luxurious room, delicious food and the sea nearby. The atmosphere facilitated creative play.

  • The 3rd round of the Women's Grand Prix has finished several minutes ago in Jermuk, Armenia. Elina Danielian's victory over Humpy Koneru of India became the highlight of the round. Both players made several mistakes, but at some point white missed a forced win. The final position doesn't look worse for black; Indian just lost on time.

  • The 4th round of the Women's Grand Prix has finished several minutes ago in Jermuk, Armenia. Ju Wenjun outplayed her compatriot Ruan Lufei and now she is a point ahead of Hou Yifan and Humpy Koneru who finished their game in a draw.

  • Hou Yifan has secured the win in the Grand Prix series and the participation in the World Championship Match
