Ivan Cheparinov's "White Double"

The bulgarian is now leading the Black sea countries tournament

The third day of the competition of grandmasters living in the countries of the Black Sea, taking place in Burgas, was tough. The players played two rounds and both of them turned out to be quite a fight. Having achieved his maximum with white Ivan Cheparinov is now the sole leader of the competition.

Crosstable, timetable, results, all the games and other information related to the tournament

In his first game Cheparinov managed to take by surprise a well-known expert of the slav.

Ivan CHEPARINOV - Vladimir MALAKHOV
Burgas, Round 3

The Slav
1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e3 Bf5 5.Nc3 e6 6.Nh4 Be4 7.f3 Bg6 8.Qb3 Qc7 9.g3 Be7

This well-known slav position is usually followed by a bishop move to d2 (right now or after the exchange on g6), and up to now White here seeks for some advantage.

10.cxd5N. A novelty. However it can not be recommended from "general overview". Black has not yet put its knight on d7 so that eventually means that White helps him to get to more active c6. Cheparinov here had some more concrete ideas.
10...cxd5 11.e4 Nc6 12.Bf4 Qd7 13.Nxg6 hxg6 14.0-0-0 Rd8 15.Be3 Qc7 16.Kb1 a6 17.Bf4 Qd7

18.h4 0-0 19.Bh3 b5
Up to now both players were quite logical in their play. The position seems quite equal.
20.h5!? Cheparinov starts to stir up trouble. Such moves are generally considered to be not the best ones by the computer but it's hard to resist against such unexpected attacks.
20...gxh5
20...Nxh5? 21.exd5 with advantage.
21.e5 Nh7 22.Qc2

22...f5 23.exf6 Rxf6 24.Be5 Rh6 25.f4 Qe8 26.g4

26...Nb4? it seems that black doesn't feel the danger coming. After 26...hxg4 27.Bxg4 Qg6 28.Rxh6 Qxh6 the position remained rather equal.
27.Qe2 hxg4 28.Qxg4 Bf8 29.f5 exf5 30.Qxf5

30...Nc6? This knight brings Black bad luck. It was also possible to resist after 30...Bd6.
31.Bg4 quite effective is 31.Bc7! Ne7 32.Qd3 Ra8 (32...Ng5 33.Bxd8 Qxd8 34.Bg2+-) 33.Be6, and Black has no defence.
31...Ne7 It was better to give away the blinking knight  31...Nxe5 32.dxe5 g6, and Black can still hold firm.
32.Qd3 Qc6

33.Ne2! Rxh1 34.Rxh1 Nf6 35.Bh3 Nh5 36.Bg4 Nf6 37.Bh3 Nh5 38.Bg2?!
38.Rc1 Qh6 39.Bg4 saved the advantage.
38...g6 39.Bh3

39...Bg7?
It's quite wrong to say that 39...Bh6 saved the game but the bishop here controlled an important с1-h6 diagonal. After that the game is very quickly over:
40.Rc1 Qe8 41.Be6+ Kh8 42.Qe3 Ng8 43.Nf4 Nxf4 44.Qxf4 1-0

In the evening round Cheparinov defeated Jobava who was perhaps unable to recover from his round 3 fight against Areshchenko. Jobava is now sharing the last place with Suat Atalik.
